The Volume Curve

Ear Conditioning
April 9 2007

Le Volume Courbe
translates as ´the volume curve´ and is apparently inspired by the do-it-yourself ethos of Nico among others.....(I don´t know too much about Nico to be honest, apart from the obvious Warhol and Velvet connection, and then recently read that she was a racist bitch http://music.guardian.co.uk/rock/story/0,,2034607,00.html) but I digress....the album, ´I Killed My Best Friend´ is a true original piece of work aided by the likes of Hope Sandoval, Kevin Shields and Keith Tenniswood. The opening track´s vocals sound as if they were recorded on my original cassette player that my mum gave me when I was ten years old.....and that is not a dis´. The vocals are countered by a melody reminiscent of a harpsichord. There is also a cinematic vibe to the album...I hope she is getting lots of people looking her way and copping this album. This is definitely a punk record-very experimental, bilingual vocals, heartbeats, tender guitar notes and more...go seek. It just hit me as I write, if you liked Tricky´s ´Aftermath´ etc. you´ll dig it.

Stretch Armstrong, the legendary NY hip hop DJ used to have a radio program with Bobbito in the 80´s and 90´s and he has digitalized thousands of demo´s that were sent in. I bagged the demo of MF Doom, which apparently was recorded while Doom was staying at Stretch´s apartment. http://konstantkontakt.blogspot.com/2007_04_01_archive.html
100% Hip Hop purity.

That´s enough blurbage from me this week. The playlist of yesterday is as follows......

Accept no substitute

You sold weapons to Iraq, Great Britain
You sold your soul to America - the Devil, Great Britain
You haven't got no religion, Great Britain
Do you really believe in Jesus, Great Britain?
Thou shall not kill, Great Britain

from "Great Britain" by Scorzayzee

I am trying to play hip hop that does not denigrate the brotherhood by constantly referring to the N-word...but I missed a couple in the Dangermouse produced Grey Album feat. Jay-Z and The Beatles, apologies for that. Dug out the Like Water for Choclate LP from Common, and even that was littered chock full with da word...damn, a bit depressing as Common is supposed to be a brother that steps outside the usual boundaries of hip hop.....so until I edit the track myself, it will have to stay on the shelf for now. His original name was Common Sense....uh?
I think we do have a responsibility as hip hop is a world wide thing, and it has got to a state where we can go to any country in the world now, and be called ´Nigga´....nah, not my cup of tea.
"Oh, your getting old!"
To that, I say, "Everybody is getting old, unless your dead!"

Finally got my hands on the self titled debut album from Vieux Farke Toure, and really into the sound of the calabash. One of the players on this album, Hassey Sarré performed with Afel Bocoum at last year´s Womad in Gran Canaria...and is well remembered for his smile which radiated throughout the venue for the entire concert.....and his playing of the njarka (spike fiddle) was not to be laughed at either.

I had one foot about to come into contact with the pavement outside Jumping Man Records http://www.jumpingmanmusica.com the shop where I purchased the Farke Toure album, when Lupi the proprietor put on a piece of music that caused me to turn to ask who was? Stanton Moore was the reply. Never heard of him...until then. I happily passed some more money to Lupi. I wanted to ask him if he would present a session on Ear Conditioning, and he replied he too has a program, at a Radio Campus, which is part of the La Laguna university here in Tenerife...I´ll get him on one day though, maybe we can do an exchange, as our respective programs do not reach each others airwave space. http://www.rcampus.net

This coming weekend I will be DJ´ing at the OCA Festival, www.oca-tenerife.com which is one of few events here that are not mafia run. Also on the bill.....Mini Market, Randal Graves (DJ Set), Tamgo, G´sus....(who used to work at the Rock City in Nottingham.....saw Ministry there yeah!!!!) Tamgo, Jeff Automatic and Harry S. Morgan to name a few. We are doing our thing at the Zona Kiu in La Orotava, so if yer in the area on Saturday April 14........

Public Enemy
are due to perform in Santa Cruz next week....I am not quite sure how the right-wing newspaper El Dia got involved as one of the sponors of the PE gig, as they do nothing but invent and publish lies about the immigration scenario regarding people coming from the African continent. I´d love to talk with Chuck about that, but it seems as if my requests for an interview with him have fallen on deaf ears, but I will continue to try. Has it been really been twenty years since I saw PE at Toronto´s Masonic Hall?

The day after PE perform, we will be returning to Santa Cruz for the Nick Cave solo concert. Does solo mean just him on his own? The word solo suggests as much, but I don´t think it will be just him. I´d like to experience Grinderman live. Please consider a return to these shores with your fellow Grinders, Mr. Cave. I always remember us passing each other on Portobello Road, London a few years back. Nick Cave, looked healthy, he had a tan, I´ll never forget it.....maybe I has this pre-concieved idea that he was paler than pale itself. Anyway what is important is his work, and it works.

Was born yesterday, but stayed up all night.

The program this week kicked off with a contribution from the Circus Klezmer, who performed at the Mueca street art festival that took place last weekend in Puerto de la Cruz. Circus Klezmer hail from Barcelona and presented a breath-stealing display, the juggling of balls, bottles, boxes, bodies, acrobatics, crowd participation, along with the entrancing music that is Klezmer, oh yeah, there is a love story in there too. Coped a CD on the way out.

The festival was also a chance to see the optical illusion work of
Eduardo Ruiz. There is no point talking about it, just look for yourself
http://anamorfosiseduardo.blogspot.com/

If there is any excuse to play the music of former Company Flow man El-P, I am there…last week saw the release of his second solo album, I´ll Sleep When Your Dead, but my copy didn´t arrive until a week later, so I went into the deep-end and drowned in the layered sound of his production and lyrics….my kind of stuff, as if you didn´t know from looking at past playlists. Hailed by many as the Hip Hop album of 2007 and 2008, the stakes have definitely been raised to another level while we are still trying to catch up with his production on the Cannibal Ox album Cold Vein, from what…..2000, 2001?!

Public Enemy main man, Chuck D had El´s on his Air America program so I jacked a copy of that to present to the ears here….it made sense as the track Drive reminded me of material from the first two PE albums. At the end of the interview, Chuck asked El-P to hook him up with 5 or 6 cuts for a new PE joint, I hope that comes to fruition for real! Will try to ask Chuck about that when PE roll into town in three weeks! The full Chuck D interviews El-P is here http://worlds-fair.net/news/?p=334

Damn, now that I think about it, Nick Cave is here a day or two after or before P.E…ain´t gonna be much sleep going on that week! Cave´s new Grinderman project with Warren Ellis, Martyn Casey and Jim Sclavunos is spot on preacher sonic blues business. Tension is present and alive with this self-titled album.

I Can´t Live Without Ears Playlist 20.03.07

Damn, did some rain fall on Tenerife this past week.
Being a mountaineous region the torrent of water carried anything that wasn´t nailed down, towards the waiting sea. The coastline is now brown, the colour of mud, earth, soil, valuable soil.

Thoughtless construction has played it´s part as well. Before man came to this spot, nature had decided where rain water was going to travel once it hit the land, but man has come along and decided that he knows better, hence buildings are being erected on top of these channels or barancos, as they are known. Question, where is the rain supposed to go? Little mudslides are not uncommon, and it may only be a matter of time before the world is going to know about Tenerife, because news of a major mudslide that is going to be on the headlines for about ten minutes, then it will be back to normal celebrity runnings.

The intense rain knocked out transmission for about half of Tuesday´s program, but we kept rolling as the program is repeated on Saturday nights.

News of the week, Public Enemy are coming to Tenerife, playing about fifteen minutes from our spot.....hoping to get Chuck D, Griff, Flavor on the program for some knowledge. Holding tight!

Right, to this week´s tuneage.....ever heard of Welcome Nsomi? He be responsible for Umabatha, the Zulu theatrical version of Macbeth.....that´s right. You wanna hear that don´t ya? I did too, so I bought it right away, no hesitation.

Cris and Airtor (Tropico28) of Neith and Soco Project braved the elements and join me for half an hour of interview and presentation of four tracks from their two projects.

Samy Birnbach, aka DJ Morpheus, the man responsible for the quality compilations Freezone, , sent me a link to an interview he did with Jonty Skrufff
www.skrufff.com He spoke about Minimal Compact, the group he formed in Amsterdam and also his latest compilation for TigerSushi. ´I Can´t Live Without My Radio´ featuring the likes of Age of Change, Heaven 17, 23 Skidoo, 400 Blows, The Residents and more, including World Domination Enterprises, which I threw in. For the interview http://www.trackitdown.net/news/101178.html

I can´t remember exactly when I first heard Sabu Martinez, but it was in Honest Jons record shop, Portobello Road. He was something wasn´t he?
http://www.hipwax.com/sabu/sabubio.html

Candidate for the best band name ever? Well, it´s gotta be Matt Johnson´s The The.....and the music is good too!

This week saw the release of the second solo album by one of my favourite producers, El-P....the album, brutally titled I´ll Sleep When Your Dead....hence another excuse to play some of his work....a remix by Cassettes Won´t Listen of his collaboration with Trent NIN Reznor, and El´s remix for TV on the Radio´s ´28 Hours´. Where is Zach man? Oh yeah, prepping the return of Rage Against the Machine. So in the meanwhile we have his collab´ with DJ Shadow. Cris and Aitor where still in the studio when I dropped this and it caught them like a Tyson uppercut, BAM!!!

Savour the flavour

Ear Conditioning
Playlist 13.03.07

Fellow Radio Pimienta presenter MAD (Mextura2) introduced me to the work of a local horn player who recorded an album, A Canary man in Boston, so a piece from that album kicked off this week´s program.

The Jane´s Addiction selection is from a concert recording. The opening salvo is, I believe, a recording of African percussion during which the band take up their instruments and positions in
preparation for ´Up the Beach´. Imagine going to see JA and them having the Burundi drummers play first...yeah, now you get the idea.

Classic blues material staked it´s claim to a piece of the airwaves, featuring a selection from Bo Diddley, Muddy Waters and Howlin´Wolf. My man Skip McDonald of Tackhead/On U was on hand to back it up with a taste from his latest album, Stone Cold Ohio.

Last week found George W. in Latin America, "Our Nation has a vital interest in helping the young democracies in our neighborhood succeed. When our neighbors prosper, they create more vibrant markets for our goods and services. When our neighbors have a hopeful future in their own countries, they can find work at home and are less likely to migrate to our country illegally. And when our neighbors feel the blessings of liberty in their daily lives, the appeal of radicalism declines, and our hemisphere becomes more secure.

I ain´t sayin´ anything, just let him tell it, you are intelligent enough to think for yourself.

Whenever I play the Big Band RTS contribution from the Balkan Express album, I get that warm glow feeling, and a smile stretching from here to there. Macedonian Jazz interlocking with AfroCuban rhythms, 100% knockout punch! I was given this record on my first visit to Serbia in 2001, I was invited to play with the band Neocekivana sila koja se iznenada pojavljuje i resava stvar, or you can call them Sila, if you want. The name translates as ´The unexpected force that suddenly arrives and solves the thing´.....yes, I thought so too...one of the best band names ever!
Getting back on track, Boris, the band´s engineer and sample maestro gave me the Balkan Express album, Jazz /Fusion gems from Yugoslavian vaults. I was told that the man that put the compilation together, Zeljko Kerleta,
basically saved a lot of jazz recordings from the old state TV/Radio station after the fall of the Yugoslavian regime. Imagine the BBC or TVE throwing out tapes upon tapes of recordings and you happen to pass a skip/rubbish container with all these tapes in them, what would you do? Saved!!!

The hand gently guided me in the direction of Checkpoint 303, a project formed by Palestinian sound catcher Yosh and Paris-based Tunisian MoCha. Their music is inspired by the sounds that surround millions in the Middle East. Screeching sounds of bullets that echo injustice, revolt, despair and sadness. www.checkpoint303.free.fr
´Hawiya Dhay´a´ uses a sample recorded during a rally in Ramallah. The voice at the beginning announcing that somebody has lost their i.d. and drivers license....metaphorical "Fi hawiya dhay´a" (there is a lost i.d.) comes at you several times throughout.
The group opened the Massive Attack /Hoping Foundation shows last month in the UK
http://www.newstatesman.com/200702050033

DJ/Rupture once again, posted for all visitors to www.negrophonic.com an excellent slice of Middle Eastern musical brilliance with Asena, "a Turkish bellybancer with impeccable taste in backing musicians." In lieu of Radio Pimienta not being online yet, I´d suggest clicking on that red bit above and checking for yerself.

Martin Manxto, a friend from the Basque Country who I know from my time in the UK, sent me a package with a heap of goodies, including some that he sent me before, (thanks Martin, the library at Radio Pimienta appreciates the double copies!)....so Rude HiFi got an airing as did Zack de la Rocha´s ´Burn Hollywood Burn´, and two joints from Dam, who seem to be getting a lot of props at the moment, good for them!

Super cool John Lurie (Lounge Lizards) surfaced with his Marvin Pontiac project www.strangeandbeautiful.com The liner notes to this project state that Marvin Pontiac died after being hit by a bus, although I am sure the guy I exchanged money with for this record said that it was just a gag. Regardless, the music is...is..ah..damn, somebody once said you can´t write about music, you have to hear it. Right now, I don´t have the vocabulary to describe. Let´s go with ´Simple ditties, weighed down with lyrics by a man who´se vision was far from impaired but nonetheless, he was for a time, resident in an institution for the not so sane.´ He refused to have his photo taken, and only descretely taken two photos exist.

Since stating last year that "Hip hop is dead", Nas has stirred a debate that has seen anybody connected with the genre throwing in their two cents worth of opinion. I think I know what he mean´t but I will leave that for another time, but I had to dig out his classic first (I think!) joint...

Carnaval in Tenerife, Robert Fisk, Abu Ghraib, Playlists

Ear Conditioning Words / Playlists 6/13 Feb. 2007

Carnaval kicked off here last week, and did it ever hit the fan.

You can deprive Canarians of health centres, introduce the euro and instantly charge double for life´s essentials, privatize the electricity, water, destroy natural protected area´s, construct a million hotels on the beachfront, no problem....but if you mess with the carnaval, then you are in big deep do-do-smelling trouble.

The choreographer they chose had no idea of what carnaval means to Canarians, so when he decided that murgas,
(local bands based on clown imagery, who take popular songs and then change the words to comment on politics and social runnings) would not be allowed to play as tradition dictates, the winner of the murgas competition refused to perform again, staging a silent protest at the treatment they and their collegues suffered at the hands of the organizers.

The choreographer also decided he didn´t want any ´fat´or ´ugly´people participating in his televised gala event, so once again he pissed off loads...that size zero shit don´t work down here. Several people later mentioned the television coverage, or lack of it. The televised event was apparently dominated by relatives of celebrities talking about themselves instead of having the camera´s trained on the event at hand.

The city of
Santa Cruz paid the choreographer in the region of one million euro´s for his work, then the next day, Zerolo, the mayor tried to make out that he was on the side of the people that made a fuss about the choreographers lack of class and feel. "We are going to sue the choreographer!"
Sue, for what?, I wondered. Apply the spin cycle, here comes a statement to make the people think he too is shocked and on the side of the people...Zerolo most propably went to the George W. Bush school of political studies. Surely he had an idea what was gonna be presented, he attended the press photo-call with all the slim, pretty thing beauty queen types of the carnaval, three weeks previously.

Zerolo could lose his job because of the carnaval fiasco, but with that Tony Blair like teflon coating, he´ll most probably survive the elections which are due in May.

And just to give you a flavour of the politics in Tenerife, Zerolo is being investigated for financial irregularities regarding a local beach and the developer who bought, from the city council, the land adjacent to the beach, which suddenly has changed status from protected and therefore not allowed to be subject to cement coverage, to voila.... it´s open season for the cement-heads,
permission to build has been granted and the land was sold for a penny.

I wish they would do something about the mayor where I live....he has been in charge for like twenty years, he´s also sits at the head of the regional party, and holds a place in the Spanish senate. What exactly he has done in twenty years of mayorship, I am not sure. You´d think a health centre in the town would be a priority. Nope, we have to go to the next town, which serves it´s own population, plus that of the surrounding pueblos. The population has grown immensely in the last ten years, but the size of the health centre hasn´t. Four hours waiting for an appointment is not unheard of. Doctors have told us they are supposed to give two minutes per patient/visitor. It takes some senior citizens one minute to get to the chair.

We don´t have a health centre, but they have just opened a home for dogs. Maybe I should go around smelling.....
"No, don´t!"
"Okay I won´t say that." But you get my point.

Anyway, back to carnaval...so it´s my first carnaval, and so there we are watching the parade containing floats, costumed bands, folkloric music groups, the young, the not so young, Charlie Chaplin, Fidel Castro, unlikely bullfighters, pushing decorated shopping trolleys (with the beers), when I spot two, three, four, five, shit....ten people, blackfaced up with massive red lips, topped with afro wigs in the procession!
Are these people serious?
Are these people stuck in the days of lynchings, Roberton´s marmalade, and the Black and White Minstrels. WTF?
Maybe I should not be too suprised since a golliwog servant features as the logo for a popular coffee here.
I kept my thoughts to myself, though Beatriz, my partner, knew my blood was not clotting. Then a group of psuedo-negro´s approached me, I think to show that they could be ´like me´(?!), or that they were cool, I dunno, I didn´t ask. One of the group reached out to touch me.....Bam, my right fist connected with his nose.

¿Que pasa? or the Spanish version of WDF? he must of said in shock. I think I was as much suprised as he. It could´ve handled it differently, but I didn´t. He backed up, mouth open, holding his nose, then looking for blood on his hand. Luckily for me, his friends took him away. I say lucky for me ´cos Beatriz said that he probably had about ten friends with him, and they could have easily done away with me. It´s true, we are basically on our own down here, just me and Beatriz. Sure this is where Beatriz is from, but we don´t hang with loads of people, so we could be fucked later, it´s an island, and everybody knows everybody. We´ll see how things turns out. Better get back to practising my kalerippiyattu.

Seriously though, a lot of people here just don´t have any sense of what racism is, how it works and manifests itself. The excuse of ignorance of other cultures is presented. Maybe so, but fercrissakes, this is two thousand and some, Africa is next door, 100 miles from here, and you wouldn´t know it.

I have spent forty-five years on this earth, and practically every day I am reminded that I am a Black person. Do ´whites´ think about their ´whiteness´ every day in the same context? No, and why should they? And why should Black people? Because we can be called into question everyday, and it´s boring, it´s so last century.....we´ve been saying that for two, four, five hundread years...yes, hun-dread, I can spell, years.

Where have these people been? Is there no education about the struggle that Black people have had to go through? About the injustice, inhumane acts etc. that have been heaped upon the darker of the world´s population. Please bring another reason that this one. Uh...Martin, Malcolm, Jesse Owen, Public Enemy, Richard Pryor, Black Panther, Huey, Elridge, Mumia, KRS-One, Spike, Farrakhan, Dr. J, Magic Johnson, Kareem Abdul, Muhammad Ali, Harriet Tubman, Angela Davis, Oprah, Nelson? Helfuckinglo, wakey, wakey!

How are Black issues dealt with in Spanish educational facilties? Is it up to me now to present some kind of Black-awareness program to the councils, schools, businesses throughout this island? (Actually, a sister of a friend makes stupid amounts of money presenting ´Anti-racism enlightenment courses´ to such establishments. This touches on another issue itself, earning a living from misery. I´ll deal with that at another time, plenty on this plate at the moment.)

Fucksakes, this is a small sliver of what my parents, the Windrush generation, went through....well, they had it worse,
London in the late fifties, early sixties, jeez! It´s something we never really discussed, my parents just got on with it, and tackled it in their own way.
When ever we went on holiday when living in the
UK or in Canada, we went to places where we´d be the only black people there.

Fellow Caribbean...that is Black, nurses would ask my Mum why we went to such and such a place, where there weren´t any other Black people, and the response would be, "You think I´m going to not go somewhere or deprive myself and my children of seeing something because somebody may have an issue with our skin colour?" The sound of Kissing of teeth would follow...

I don´tknow, I just thought for some reason that through time we would get beyond these stupid, but real issues.

Ear Conditioning 6 Feb. 2007
I am almost finished the epic book by journalist Robert Fisk, The Great War for Civilization / The Conquest of the Middle East...nearly 1300 pages of in-depth reporting, analysis, interviews, observations, eyewitness accounts, stories of grief and outrage. Chronicles of the powerful and misery of the innocent. The scurge of policitians and their soldiers, devoid of humanity. Some of the same soldiers are then abandoned by their government when infected with the same depleted uranium they used on Iraqi civilians.
Robert Fisk makes effort to get the names of those that would otherwise remain nameless victims of the US/UK/ Israeli assault on the
Middle East world.

So with this in mind, much of the program featured soundbites from luminaries such as Howard Zinn, Angela Y. Davis, Mumia Abu Jamal, Chomsky, Greg Palast, Chavez and Marcos. Much of the spoken word material was sourced from Jello Biafra´s Alternative Tentacles label (
www.alternativetentacles.com)
They have a great catalogue of music and spoken word....if your into that kinda thing of course.

I also found a video clip at Alternet that was taken off youtube.com because it ´violated´ the youtube terms of agreement. The clip featured a former US soldier/guard at Abu Ghraib talking with his mates over a few beers about some of the things they got up to at the prison.

One of his collegues "pimped out" a fifteen year old Iraqi girl.
"He made about 500 bucks before she hung herself."
"Why´d she kill herself man?" somebody off camera asks.
Something along the lines of "She´d be stoned to death by her people, that kinda thing is shameful to them kinda folks." Nuff said.

This week also featured a bit of a French flavour, as I recieved a promo Cd of French music....which was good, however, I thought it a bit strange that five of the first six songs were in English.
